Ancient Egyptian civilization lasted more than three thousand years, but it was far from static—historians divide it into periods marked by change and upheaval. Its architecture reflects this, shifting in style over time while sharing some consistent features. Most surviving structures are religious or funerary, and these tended to follow conservative tastes. The pyramids and the Sphinx are the most famous examples, but excavated temples, palaces, tombs, and fortresses have also been studied.
Builders relied on locally available materials: sun-baked mud brick and stone, especially limestone, along with sandstone and granite. Wood was scarce. From the Old Kingdom onward, stone was used mainly for tombs and temples, while mud brick went into royal palaces, fortresses, temple walls, towns, and subsidiary buildings. Pyramid cores were made of local stone, mud brick, sand, or gravel, with casing stones—white limestone from Tura and red granite from Upper Egypt—brought from farther away. Houses were built from Nile mud, shaped in molds and dried in the sun. If bricks were for a royal tomb, the outer ones were finely chiseled and polished.
Many Egyptian towns have vanished because they were built near the Nile’s floodplain and were buried as the riverbed rose, or their mud bricks were reused as fertilizer. Others lie under later construction. But the dry climate preserved some mud brick sites, like the village of Deir el-Medina, the Middle Kingdom town at Kahun, and the fortresses at Buhen and Mirgissa. Stone temples and tombs survived because they stood on high ground, safe from floods. Our knowledge of Egyptian architecture thus comes mostly from religious monuments: massive structures with thick, sloping walls and few openings—a design that may echo methods used to stabilize mud walls. The flat, incised decoration on stone buildings might also derive from mud wall ornamentation. Though corbeled vaults were used as early as the Fourth Dynasty, the true arch (voussoir arch) did not appear in Egypt until the New Kingdom or later; all monumental buildings used post-and-lintel construction, with flat roofs of huge stone blocks supported by outer walls and closely spaced columns.
