Fountain pen

A writing instrument using an internal reservoir to hold ink.

A fountain pen is a tool for writing that delivers water-based ink to paper through a metal nib. Unlike older dip pens, it holds ink inside itself, so you don’t have to keep dipping it into an inkwell. The ink travels from this internal storage, through a feed, and onto the nib, moving by gravity and capillary action. You can fill the reservoir by hand—using an eyedropper or syringe—or with an internal mechanism that creates suction or a vacuum, pulling ink directly through the nib. Some pens use removable reservoirs, like pre-filled cartridges or converters. These pens were most popular from the 1800s to the mid-1900s, until ballpoints took over, but they’re still used by calligraphers and for other specialized purposes.

Early reservoir pens appear in historical records. Around 974, Qadi al-Nu'man al-Tamimi wrote that the Fatimid caliph Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah wanted a pen that wouldn’t stain his hands or clothes, and was given one with an ink reservoir that could be held upside down without leaking. Evidence also suggests Leonardo da Vinci built a working fountain pen during the Renaissance. His notebooks include cross-section drawings of a reservoir pen that used gravity and capillary action, and his handwriting shows consistent contrast, unlike the fading typical of quills. No physical pen survives, but artist Amerigo Bombara reconstructed working models in 2011, now displayed in museums dedicated to Leonardo.

In Europe, the fountain pen appeared by the 17th century. In 1636, German inventor Daniel Schwenter described a pen made from two quills—one inside the other as an ink reservoir, sealed with cork, with ink squeezed through a small hole to the tip. In 1663, diarist Samuel Pepys noted receiving a silver pen “to carry inke in.” Maryland historian Hester Dorsey Richardson found references to “three silver fountain pens, worth 15 shillings” in England under Charles II (1649–1685), and by the early 1700s, such pens were commonly called “fountain pens.” She also recorded a 1734 notation in Robert Morris the elder’s ledger for “one fountain pen” in Philadelphia. Nicholas Bion’s 1709 treatise included an illustrated description of a “plume sans fin,” translated into English in 1723. The earliest datable pen matching Bion’s design is inscribed 1702, and others bear French hallmarks into the early 1800s.

The first fountain pens making use of iridium-tipped gold nib, hard rubber, and free-flowing ink appeared in the 1850s. The era of mass-produced fountain pens began in the 1880s, with dominant American producers Waterman and Wirt. Self-filling mechanisms gained popularity around the turn of the century, with Walter A. Sheaffer's lever-filler introduced in 1912 and Parker's button-filler. In Europe, Pelikan introduced the first modern screw piston-filling fountain pen in 1929.
